David Allen
Painting since age 14, Dave has exhibited his work and earned numerous awards with his paintings. Many have spotted Dave around South
Bend and along the St. Joseph River with his easels set up painting scenes that others may find mundane and ordinary. Dave has been
teaching for ten years and many of his students return for more classes. This is certainly the best testimony of his abilities as an instructor.  
Drawing and Painting                        
Thursdays 10am to 1pm
8 wks—$120 member/$140 non member
In a relaxed  and informal atmosphere, every
skill level, (beginner to accomplished artist),
may work in the medium of their choice
including oil paint, watercolor, pastel, pencil,
acrylic. Participants may work from
photographs or from life. The classroom
atmosphere is casual but the intent to make
real art is real. Students will receive as much
or as little instruction as they desire.
Joseph Schultz
After thirty-four years working as a commercial artist, Joe retired to immerse himself in painting. His teaching reflects the knowledge gleaned over
his many years working in illustration and fine art. He appreciates the luminous and versatility of oils and works in a style of oil washes and wiping
out the highlights. He is a member of the Hoosier Salon and Northern Indiana Artists and has won many awards for his paintings in oil on canvas.

Illustration Techniques in Oil
Wednesdays 6pm to 9pm
8 wks– $120 member /$140 non member
Break the traditional rules of oil painting on canvas and learn
techniques used by top illustrators. Discover new ways to approach
your subject matter as you turn your photos into beautiful paintings.
Work with an award-winning artist who has 35 years of experience in
illustration. Supply list provided.
Leslie Straniero, BFA
Leslie graduated with honors from Indiana University South Bend with a BFA in painting. She continued her study of drawing and painting with
Master Portrait Painter Harry Ahn as well as with Diane Tesler, Alexandria, VA. Leslie’s work has been widely exhibited earning numerous
awards. She has taught painting and drawing classes in the Michiana area for five years and sincerely believes with enough inspiration and

Beginning Drawing
Tuesdays 1230pm to 330pm
8 wks—$120 member/$140 nonmember
This comprehensive course begins with an
explanation of materials and how to use
them. You will experiment with line and
shading using graphite and charcoal. One
and two point perspective will be covered.
Learn how to draw and shade simple
shapes such as a box, sphere, cylinder,
and cone. Emphasis will be given to
creating a three dimensional look. Lighting
will be discussed. The last three weeks will
be devoted to composing and creating a
simple still life. Slides and handouts. Learn
from an experienced instructor.
Painting For Beginners
Tuesdays from 6pm to 9pm
8 wks– $120 member/$140 non
member
This structured class is designed for the
ultimate beginner. The first class will
discuss how to use the materials for oil
painting. Brushes, knives, mediums,
canvas will be discussed. There will be
exercises on applying paint, mixing
colors, value studies, and progress to
copy a great master painting. Students
will learn how to paint simple forms --
box, cylinder, cone, sphere and then
move on to a simple still life, time
permitting. Slides and handouts.
Beginners only!
Intermediate Painting
Thursdays from 130pm to 430pm
8 wks—$120 members/$140 non
members
Want to learn a new approach to
starting a painting? Have you ever
worked on a colored canvas, done  an
underpainting first, or worked in an Alla
Prima style? Intermediate painters may
work on their own independent projects.
Beginning painters will have structured
assignments covering color mixing,
composition, and different ways of
applying paint. Work in a supportive,
encouraging environment. Handouts will
be provided.
Cathy McCormick
Cathy has been conducting classes in pastels and drawing for more than 15 years. She received a BA in education from the University of
Wisconsin-Whitewater where she studied art. She combines her teaching skills and the making of art. Cathy is also a docent at the South Bend Museum of
Art and the Snite Museum. Her work has been featured in many shows and she has coordinated more than a dozen exhibits, workshops, and art
conferences. She is also a founding board member of the newly formed Northern Indiana Pastel Society.
Landscape Pastels
Fridays -930am to noon
8 wks—$100 member/$120 non member
Learn the ins and outs of soft pastels while
creating lively landscapes. Beginners and
advanced students will receive individual
attention and critiques in a welcoming and
supportive atmosphere.
Howard Scott
Howard has been exhibiting his watercolors since 1975 and has won numerous awards for his paintings. He holds memberships in several local art
organizations. He has studied watercolor with Jim Borden, Tony Couch, Frank Webb, and Nita Engle. Howard retired from the United States Post Office
to become a full time artist. He enjoys doing art fairs during the summer and is always exploring techniques to incorporate into his paintings to attract
potential buyers. Howard enjoys sharing his knowledge with students.
Watercolor Exploration
Wednesdays 10am to 1pm
8 wks - $120 member/$140 non member
This class gives the beginning and experienced
watercolor student the opportunity to work with a variety of
techniques including wet – on wet, dry brush, and washes. Color
mixing is also covered. Participants can expect to complete a
painting during each session.
Portrait Painting
Fridays 7pm to 10pm
8 wks—$120 member/$140 non member
A portrait from life may be the richest subject
to paint - from a technical, psychological, and
practical standpoint. Designed for oil painters,
all mediums are welcome in the class. A live
model is used and participants share the cost
of the model’s fee.
Block Printing
Saturdays 10am to noon
8 wks—$80 member/$100 non
member
Linoleum block printing is a cheap and
easy way to make a genuine print that
can be reproduced over and over. The
process requires cutting a picture into
a linoleum block with special knives and
then inking the block and printing the
image on paper. This is a low-tech
class, but the principals are the same
as with the most sophisticated printing.
