Joseph Schultz began his career in art after serving four years in the navy. A correspondence course, one year at
the South Bend Art Center, and a year at Ivy Tech's first year school for commercial art, prepared Joe for working
at a local advertising agency.
While freelancing for Michiana's largest commercial art studio, he was asked to teach part-time at Ivy Tech and to
help develop their art and photography department.
From this exposure, Joe developed enough clients to start Schultz Advertising Art; evolving into Schultz Art
Studio, Inc. He also served as Art Director for numerous firms.
From 1978 to 1980, Joe was employed as the Art Director for South Bend Toy Company and maintained his
freelance business nights and weekends.
During the 80's Joe found his interests heading towards illustration and fine art. The talents of artists and
illustrators such as Robert Heindel, Mark English, and most notably Bernie Fuchs inspired him. Joe took every
opportunity to attend workshops presented by these artists to develop his skills and talents.
After thirty-four years, Joe retired from commercial work to immerse himself in painting.
As a member of the Hoosier Salon and Northern Indiana Artists, Joe has experienced success in sales and
awards from exhibitions.
Joe's choice of medium is oil on canvas. He appreciates the luminous and versatility of oils and works in a style
of oil washes and wiping out the highlights. Subjects with strong lighting are always attractive to him.
His favorite painting subjects are landscapes and people.
